A fixture of Burlington’s thriving social scene, Michael van Gulden— “Mikey" to all he meets— is the founder and CEO of Chocolate Thunder Security and Thunder Buck$.
In 1991, Mikey started providing informal security for local parties, which led to his first security guard gig at Burlington’s legendary Nectar’s, where he stayed for close to 9 years. During this time he also worked at Higher Ground Music Hall, and a series of music festivals including Phish’s Lemonwheel, Berkshire Mountain Music Fest, High Sierra Music Festival, and Jam Cruise. Mikey’s exceptional aptitude and positive presence at these events led to him becoming a first call operator, who was flown in to perform special security functions at various major festivals around the country, and he became aware of the need for multiple cash resources at events.
In 2010, Mikey pursued the concept of combining private security services and ATM services, recognizing the gap between vendor sales and customers’ desire to carry cash. High service fee percentages charged by using digital payment solutions such as Venmo, PayPal, and Square have made transactions under $50 increase the merchant’s bottom line to the tune of 3%-6% per sale.
Mikey and his wife reside in Vermont, year-round, enjoying the outdoor activities, community events, and all that the Green Mountains and its surroundings have to offer, with their son and daughter.
